Support request for the Ward's Safer Neighbourhood Team and Ward Panel

Today I've written to the Borough Commander and Lewisham's Head of Crime Reduction (see below) highlighting a communication problem that both the Ward Safer Neighbourhood Panel, our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, and myself and my councillor colleagues have been experiencing with our Safer Neighbourhood Team and Lewisham Met. As you'll see from my letter I don't believe this is the fault of our SNT Team, I just feel that not enough funding or resources have been allocated to really make this initiative work to everyone's satisfaction and I've suggested how this problem might be addressed. We allocated money from the 2007 Locality Fund to support both our Ward Panel and our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator but there's no other finding that I'm aware of to support and develop these initiatives. Hopefully a solution will be found that won't impact on the excellent work of our SNT Team. I'll update this item if there's any progress.

-----

Dear Alan and Geeta

I'm writing, both as a ward councillor and as a member of the Lee Green Ward Safer Neighbourhood Panel, about a problem that has arisen over the last six months or so, which is impacting on both our local SNT Panel and the co-ordination of our local Neighbourhood Watch schemes. The problem is one of communication between our SNT Team, Lewisham police and our Panel and local residents. The Chair of our SNT Panel has apparently been recently informed by the Chief Inspector in charge of the Safer Neighbourhood Teams that because of under staffing we'll probably in the future have to get ward crime statistics from the Met's web site. I don't know if either of you have looked at the presentation of these figures recently, but the last time I looked they were not broken down by street and were largely incomprehensible to the average ward panel member. There's been no local funding at all to support either the SNT Panels or Neighbourhood Watch that I'm aware of, and I think there's a danger that if information is also not forthcoming local support for these initiatives will dwindle away.

Over the last six months it has become increasingly obvious that our SNT Team don't have the time to engage in any form of correspondence with the Panel or the ward's councillors. This could well be a common problem with all SNT panels, and it seems to me that it doesn't actually need a member of an SNT team to pull these figures together, but could just as easily be done by a civilian clerical officer emailing this information out to all the ward panels and ward councillors. I would like to make it clear that we have no problem at all with the way our SNT team are policing the Ward, and the last meeting of the SNT Panel was an especially good one, and our new sergeant gave perhaps the best update we've ever had, but we have no written month on month figures to compare, and no real idea what the crime situation is in the ward until the next meeting. This is making things especially difficult on a ward level where residents are quite rightly expecting the Chair of our Panel and the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator to provide updates on the crime situation in their area. I believe what is needed here is some clerical support for the SNT teams as we obviously want them to be out and policing the ward and not tied up in anymore paperwork than is strictly necessary. I don't think this is something that can be easily resolved by just our SNT team, and I really believe that Lewisham and the Met need to look with some urgency into providing clerical support for all the SNT teams, and that this problem of under funding and under resourcing the Safer Neighbourhood initiative needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency.

Regards
