Record number of Christmas trees recycled!
According to the latest press release from Lewisham 7,200 Christmas trees – double the number collected last year - were dropped off at collection points around Lewisham for recycling. In 2007 Lewisham collected 3,521 trees, more than double the 1,250 trees collected in 2006.
The trees have now been chipped, ready to be used for various environmental projects around the borough, including being laid as a weed suppressant in green spaces and housing estates in Lewisham and creating woodland pathways in parks and green spaces around the borough.
Well done everyone - let's see if we can double it again next year!

It is not anticipate that the current investigation of the brick cladding at Merridale will have any impact on this but should it prove necessary Lewisham Homes will arrange an alternative location.

Anti-skid works in Burnt Ash/Upwood Road
We've just received notification of anti-skid surfacing works that start tomorrow in Burnt Ash/Upwood Road:
Dear Resident
As part of its commitment to ensure the Borough’s Highway Network is safe for all users the Council has been able to programme Anti-Skid surfacing works to the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Upwood Road.
The works are due to start Wednesday 27th February and will be carried out at night between the hours of 7pm to 5am for approximately 3 nights. However the works can only be carried out if the surface is dry so will be deferred by one night in the event of wet weather. Traffic will be controlled by lights allowing alternate flow.
Heavy plant and machinery will inevitably cause some noise nuisance but we will minimise this wherever possible. The surfacing Contractor will be J Crowley Ltd. Lewisham staff will be on site at various times carrying out site inspections.
Lewisham Council thank you for your patience during these works and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
I apologise for the short notice, however if you need any further information or have any concerns please contact myself on 020 8314 2261 or my colleague Samantha on 020 8314 2181.
Yours sincerely
Brian Humphris

Save Burnt Ash Hill Post Office!
From my colleague, Cllr Brian Robson's website:

Today another round of Post Office closures was announced. As part of a cull of 2,500 Post Offices nationwide, 169 Post Offices in London are for the chop - and one of them’s in Lee Green ward - the Burnt Ash Hill Post Office, near Lee Station.
Burnt Ash Hill Post Office is the last Post Office in our ward (the Post Office next to the New Tigers’ Head is actually in Greenwich Borough).
The Post Office themselves admit that Burnt Ash Hill is used by between 1,000 and 1,500 people every week - I’m not surprised, given how handy it is for Lee Station and local bus routes. It’s part of a thriving parade of shops, and we don’t have to look too far in Lee Green to see what happens when shops start pulling out of a parade.
The Post Office haven’t proved very willing to listen to local people when they’ve proposed closures elsewhere, but your Lee Green Councillor team are not going to take this proposal lying down.
We’ve launched a petition and set up a special campaign website - www.ourcampaign.org.uk/burntash - where you can sign the petition and download a form so you can collect more signatures yourself. Please do visit it and encourage your friends and family to sign the petition - the more signatures, the better.
I’ve been in touch with the press, and the NewsShopper put an article on their website this afternoon.
To express your views direct to the Post Office, write to Anita Turner, Network Development Manager, C/o National Consultation Team, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM. You can call the Post Office team on 08457 22 33 44 or email consultation {at} postoffice.co(.)uk

Neighbourhood Watch Open Evening
There will be a Neighbourhood Watch Open Evening at 7pm on the 16th April at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Handen Road. At the meeting you'll be able to meet some of our local police Safer Neighbourhood Team, our local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, and the Chair of our Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel. The latest crime figures for the ward will be available on the night and their will be refreshments!
This is an ideal opportunity to find out more about Neighbourhood Watch and start a scheme in your road, so why not come along? You can get further details about the event from our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Linda Cohen on 020 8463 0798, or from our Safer Neighbourhood Team on 020 8721 2482.
What is Neighbourhood Watch?
Neighbourhood Watch is a partnership between residents, our local police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), our local Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel, and the Council's Crime Reduction Unit.
So how does it work?
Well, obviously our Safer Neighbourhood Team can't be everywhere in the ward all the time, so the idea of Neighbourhood Watch is that we all become the eyes and ears of the community and report suspicious activity, anti-social behaviour, and any criminal activity in our streets to our SNT. In return our SNT, through our streets Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, keep residents informed of any criminal activity in their immediate neighbourhood. Neighbourhood Watch members are not expected to tackle incidents themselves, but just report it to our SNT. The policing priorities of our SNT are partly set through our Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel. This is made up of residents who represent as wide a range of interests in the ward as possible. The panel meets about six times a year and after reviewing the crime statistics for the ward, and hearing the SNT team's report, decides which three policing priorities the SNT team concentrate on until the next meeting of the panel.
At present there are Neighbourhood Watch schemes in:
Carston Close
Cordwell Close & Northbrook Road
Dallinger Road
Effingham Road
Handen Road
Orchid Close
Rose Way & Silk CLose
Taunton Road
Woodyates Road

Merridale residents evacuated when wall bows
Merridale is in the news following the evacuation of residents yesterday when a wall between the 6th and 7th floor at Merridale started to bow and (from the report I received) cracks appeared in their walls. My colleague, Cllr Brian Robson, was at Merridale yesterday and has asked Lewisham Homes for an update. As soon as we know more we'll update this item.
Update Thursday 21st:
We've been advised by Lewisham Homes that their staff have been on site together with a structural engineer and were advised by the structural engineer that the block is safe to occupy but that closer examination of the area was required to determine the nature and extent of the problem and this should have taken place yesterday (Wednesday). Apparently a letter has been delivered to all residents explaining the situation and staff have doorknocked flats in the affected wing to talk to residents who were in. We think that everyone in Merridale and nearby houses in Carston Close should have been doorknocked and I know that my colleague, Cllr Brian Robson was following this up.

New LINK cash machine at Leegate
There's a new LINK cash machine outside Woolworths in Leegate.
And talking of cash machines there's a planning application for the installation of a cash machine (or ATM) at 3 Burnt Ash Hill. We'll soon be spoilt for choice!
