A public drop-in session has been arranged for Tuesday 31 July from 4pm until 8pm at the Ted Ray Scouts Hall, Springbank Road, Hither Green, to give local residents a chance to view Hatcham (NX) Ltd’s redevelopment plans for 72-78 Nightingale Grove, and ask questions of the project team. Lee Green conservation area review

A review is getting underway of the Lee Green conservation area which stretches from Old Road, then down Manor Lane to the railway line, and up Effingham to Burnt Ash where it incorporates the block of old buildings around Lee station. You can download a (not very) good map here

There are a number of listed buildings in the conservation area; Lochaber Hall, Pentland House, Manor House Library (plus the wall and telephone box outside), and the four impressive old buildings alongside Lee Health Centre in Burnt Ash Road. A public consultation exercise will take place in September / October and residents will be sent a consultation document with a questionnaire to canvas their views on the Council's proposals and a public meeting will be held for further information. Following revision of the proposals if necessary, the appraisal will be adopted and published by March 2008 and any management proposals carried out thereafter.

The reviews involve studying the area to make sure that it is still worthy of conservation area status and reconsidering the boundaries to see if they should be reduced or increased. Conservation area appraisals are documents that set out the character and appearance of the area that it is desirable to preserve or enhance. These documents are produced as part of a review and are used in determining planning applications. They generally include summaries of the history of the area, maps showing the townscape, views and important buildings in the conservation area and summarise the special interest of the area. Management proposals will be developed from the information gathered during the review and these could include making an Article 4(2) direction to control external alterations to houses in the area.

Indicative plans for Northbrook school

If you're curious how the plans for the Northbrook school rebuild are progressing you won't want to miss the display of the indicative plans in the foyer of the school in Taunton Road on the 20th August between 1 and 8pm. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us to contribute to getting the best possible building for our community and future students.

Hope to see you there!

Listed telephone box by Manor House library

With so many of us now owning and using mobile phones public telephone boxes like the one outside Manor House library are being used less and less. Worse still, the lack of use means they are frequently the target for graffiti, anti-social behaviour like drug dealing, and old style telephone boxes in particular are frequently vandalised and urinated in. The Manor House telephone box may be listed but it still suffers from all these ills. So your councillor team would like to hear what you think should happen to the box. Should we leave it as it is? Relocate it - and if so where? Remove it and scrap it? Find it another use? Maybe you use this box and would be sorry to see it go - let us know what you think!
